With tremendous success, PC Pedorthics has used Sharp Shape Automated Orthotic Manufacturing System (AOMS) since 2005. The negative foot impressions of the patient’s feet are digitally scanned using a proprietary 3D Laser Scanner. After the biomechanical corrections are made in the CAD program, the positives are milled out of High Density Foam by the CNC milling machine. The elimination of plaster molds also has a positive (GREEN) effect on our land fill sites. The positives are then used as the “cast" on which the foot orthotic shell material is vacuum thermoformed. This system, developed by Alex Shang, Ph.D. (California U.S.A.), has improved the functionality, quality of orthotics and reduces production time.
The automated design system has two distinct functions. One function is the ability to capture the foot and change it into a digitized form that can be evaluated, shown on a computer and used in the production of a functional orthotic device. The second function is the ability of the pedorthist to precisely manipulate and change the shape of this digitized data. More accurate cast corrections are created ultimately improving both comfortable and effectivness in controlling the patient's biomechanical condition. The system can also be utilized for patient education and clinical reaserch. |
