    Custom Orthotics

What is a Foot Orthotic ?

A foot orthotic (orthoses) is a brace that can be discretely inserted into a shoe to support, align, prevent and/or correct foot deformities and improve foot function. Used in conjunction with appropriate footwear, a foot orthotic can be effective in helping to treat a number of foot and lower leg problems including conditions such as diabetes and arthritis. Repetitive recreational activities such running, tennis, walking and hiking can lead to overuse injuries that may be successfully resolved with the use of a custom foot orthotic.

    Who Needs Orthotic Devices ?

If you are experiencing foot, shin, knee, hip, or low back discomfort that does not resolve, the origins may be bio-mechanical in nature, in which case an orthotic device may be helpful. Since orthotic devices can work in a preventative fashion, they may be appropriate in some cases where future problems may be considered likely. As an example, if the foot rolls in or flattens excessively, our lower extremities become predisposed to additional stress, leading to possible pain and limited function. Similar problems may occur with a high arched foot. High arched feet while standing are typically imbalanced and provide very poor shock absorption. Orthotics can ultimately improve weight distribution and comfort. Keep in mind, regardless of foot type, as we walk, run or play sports, our entire body weight lands on our feet up to 4,000 times a day.

    Types of Orthotics

Soft - Often referred to as a “full contact”orthotic is typically fabricated
from combinations of compressible foam and rubber materials. Patients with high arches or diabetes who require maximum forgiveness’ and shock absorbing properties will find this device most helpful. Soft orthotics do however take up more space in ones shoe and have limited life and support characteristics.

Semi-Flexible Also considered “Semi Rigid” are made of a wide variety of materials      which would include a flexible thermal plastic molded shell and several densities of closed cell foam. These types of designs can be constructed to provide endless combinations of support and shock absorbing features. These devices tend to work best for work and recreational activity.

Hard Made of very stiff thermal plastic or composite materials offering limited shock absorbing capabilities while potentially maximizing support. These designs can be effective for children requiring corrective support or adults who have jobs requiring long hours of standing. These devices should be discouraged for an athletic population due to the unforgiving nature of these materials.

    Special Designs

With very few exceptions custom orthotics can be made for all types of footwear. Patients however, need to be aware that not all custom orthotics provide the same support or shock absorbent qualities. Patients of PC Pedorthics will be assessed with the view of determining what style or material make-up is going to best serve their needs. Orthotics can be designed for all types of sports shoes, dress shoes, skates and ski boots. The types and styles of ones shoes are also a critical part of the over all treatment plan.
